SECOND BAPTIST CHURCH

6400 WOODWAY

HOUSTON, TX 77024

Second Baptist Church was originally at the corner of Milam and McGowen, downtown Houston.  The church was established early in the century and first pastored by James B Leavell (father of James B Leavell who married Bob & Wanda in San Angelo).  The new church was an offshoot of the First Baptist Church.  After the church moved to its present location on Woodway, another church bought and worshiped in the Milam Street facility for many years.  Then it was sold and demolished, there was to have been a parking lot built there.  But to this date (1995) it is a vacant lot.

The Wooodway facility began with school facilities K-6 grade and adult classrooms with the worship services being held in the gym.  The classical sanctuary was built under the pastorage of James Riley.  Under the pastorage of Ed Young the new worship center was built, the school expanded through high school.

Susan and David became Christians and were baptized here by Dr Riley.  The family membership remained here until Susan was in high school.  We wrongly thought the kids should go to church in the neighborhood where they would be in church with high school acquaintances.

Bob & Wanda returned their membership to Second Baptist after the children graduated from high school.
